Can I create a brand new record category?
Sometimes. Record keepers usually want a category that is measurable, breakable, standardized and interesting to others.
Sometimes. Record keepers are generally open to new ideas, but a new category has to meet a few tests before it is accepted.
What makes a good category
- Measurable. A clear number: time, distance, weight, count.
- Breakable. Others can try to beat it under the same conditions.
- Standardized. The rules can be written so anyone can follow them.
- Not too narrow. Adding endless qualifiers to make it unique rarely works.
- Safe. Attempts that put people or animals at undue risk are usually refused.
The process in general
You typically submit a proposal describing the idea. If it is accepted, the organization sets guidelines and sometimes a minimum target. Then you attempt it under those rules.
Or pick an existing one
Existing categories have clear rules and a known target. That makes planning easier and the result more meaningful.
